What is Operation Cool?

Operation Cool is a seat belt awareness program that provides positive rewards for high school students who wear their seat belts.

Students are asked to sign contracts that state they will:

  • Stay enrolled in school

  • Wear their seat belts

  • Ask their passengers to buckle up

  • Not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

What are the goals of the program?

1. Save the lives of teens.

2. Encourage teens to form lifelong good driving habits.

Why are these goals important?

  • Nationally, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-20 year olds.

  • Statewide, 189 teens (aged 13-19) died in automobile crashes in 1999, 71% were not wearing seat belts.

What is the History of Operation Cool?

Operation Cool resulted from the frustrations of a hardened Illinois State Police Commander watching teens drive away from high schools not wearing their seat belts.  He knew that several teens would die that year in the district because they didn't think it was "cool" to wear seat belts.  He decided to make it "cool."
