News and Updates

We are proud of the fact that our agency is known for it's professionalism and progressiveness.  The enforcement division consists of 15 sworn Deputy Sheriff's (including two patrol Sergeants, a Detective Sergeant with an additional detective, a Canine Unit and a Court Security Officer).  Deputy Sheriff's possess the same authority as the Sheriff of the County and are the senior law enforcement agents in the County, by statute.  Deputy Sheriff's are officers of the Court in addition to their regular duties as a peace officer.  Deputies serve warrants and orders of the Court, enforce Court orders and act on the Court's behalf.  DeWitt County consists of 400 square miles of patrol area and includes the towns of Clinton and Farmer City, each of which has their own police department.  Deputy Sheriff's attend an approved State training course (12 weeks at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute) and have minimum eight-week field training cycle at the department.  Deputy Sheriff's serve a one year probationary period.  Deputies are represented by the Fraternal Order of Police and are merited by the DeWitt County Sheriff's Merit Commission.  If this seems like a position that you would be interested in making a career, please see the information on the "DeWitt County Sheriff's Merit Commission Orientation", on this page.
